i finally joined pinterest thanks to my team leader/friend/fellow artist bugging me to no end (haha thanks you pey). what i like about it as opposed to tumblr is that you can make categories that stand out and that dont override the content on the page. tumblr to me is like flipping thru a magazine with large pictures. that and it is more impersonal feeling. you scroll down the page and see one thing at a time on your home page and if you go to someone elses page you are at their mercy for how they have chosen to set it up.

pinterest is more basic and that works for me when it comes to a large amount of content being shown. i like that you can follow someone and yet unfollow certain 'boards' (categories) that they have made so you arent visually inundated with things that do not interest you in the slighted.

i havent added much content to it, i find myself wanting to be more selective and not just blast the universe with more stuff for no reason. i'm limiting my 'boards' too so when you go there you arent having to unfollow a zillion things if you dont like what you are seeing (that is my one gripe with it it takes too much time to unfollow people's boards if they have 20 or more and i only really want to follow one). i also am not blasting all of my own work there, again, feels a little too desperate or unsavory in my mind. i like having a place that really just shows what i like without muchado.

i have to laugh as i have completely ignored this blog for ages. i've thought about deleting it since i usually do all my blogging on my 'self taught artist' blog. so today i come here to possibly post something and notice nearly all my posts have had the pictures removed. i guess when i joined google+ and went into picasa i got into housecleaning mode and deleted photos? who knows. suffice to say i just now had to remove a few years worth of posts because the pictures were gone.

i've decided to keep this blog until the end of the year, and if i havent revived it by then...if i have no visitors i will nix it. considering its been months and no one has told me all my photos are missing i guess that tells me no one visits anyhow. i would like to think i can make this more of an etsy blog that revolves around team members/treasuries/and new items. it's always nice to share other people's work and i aim to do that since i am on two etsy teams and am in lots of wonderful treasuries.

I decided to get my other shop going this weekend. It is called 'Industrial Habitat' and it is where I offer my finds or supplies for art/decor. Rather than it be just another vintage shop, I'm going to focus more on items that I myself would make art out of or objects that strike me as perfectly capable as being functional or decorative all on their own.

I hope you enjoy it, truth be told I want to keep every single thing for myself but there isn't enough space or time in my life right now to do that. May as well share the goods and lighten my load at the same time! Stop by, visit. Heart my shop...help me get it seen eh? It's a good sign a treasury I made recently made front page this morning :) congrats everyone!

The Umbrella Mushroom

New flower...errr mushroom. The Umbrella plant. It's still challenging to find things that are colorful and small at the scrap yard or out walking around. I was delighted last week when I spotted this little thing at the bottom of the scrap heap. When I go to the scrap yard (its a small place that has just one pile of stuff with a few bins for other metals) I never know if i will get much. They keep it clean and are always doing work back there, its usually noisy and the guys are busy dumping stuff and cutting stuff. It's hard for me to just waltz in there and walk around the pile and not feel like I'm in their way. Me and my little bag as if I'm going shopping. Well, for me it is much more fun than 'real' shopping!

The base is a cool piece of plumbing hardware, a neighbor was the recipient of someone cleaning up their house (another hoarder/artist) and thought of me immediately. I was thrilled to get more 'base' pieces for my flowers! So there you have it, another flower with a history and now a new life.

Finally finished some new flowers for my other etsy shop, Industrial Bloom. More 'Bromeliads'. That is what I call the faucet knob flowers. And that Yellow one...I have no idea what that thing is, I had to cut off other parts that were attached to it. There were four screws holding another long piece onto it that were so rusted and old I had no choice but to use the cut off wheel and do it that way. I always try to save the hardware and keep things in one piece ...I am happy to say I will be able to make two more yellow flowers from that piece so there will be a yellow bouquet, if you will of the same 'family' of that found object.

Also these are all taller than most of my other flowers. And that Blue Beasty flower above, has super thick rebar instead of the regular thin stuff I usually use. That too was a challenge to cut and then shape the bottom into a 'spear' so it will actually go into the ground. I'm loving my flowers and hoping to make more soon. My biggest challenge is always finding enough colorful found objects as most people do like the brighter ones the most.

Just found a fresh batch of rebar at the scrap yard...thinking I'm gonna cut up some more pipes for votive holders and vases. Finally getting back to life after dealing with some personal living situation stuff and looking forward to creating some other brand new work too!

Industrial Bloom etsy shop

okay. i finally have my new etsy shop up! this time around i actually paid another artist to create the banner and avatar. i wanted something surreal...i wanted my flowers to be popping up like some salvador dali painting and tom aka promopocket (an artist who lives/works in lithuania) did just that. i didn't have many images for him to work with and amazingly he did just what i had in mind without me going nuts sending a billion different photos. thank you tom! great job especially since i only had a handful of flowers made/sent to you to work with!

so. the shop is up. i've spent the morning getting it up and loading just a handful of works. more in the coming days. takes a fair amount of time to figure out descriptions/shipping details. it feels good to have a separate shop up that will carry just one type of work. i look forward to watching it grow. (pun intended).

Above are a handful of brand new candle holders. This new design was created by slicing up various pipes and then combining different colors/pipes together. I'm loving the look of these, to me they are like little artifacts. Or pottery....something very organic about these.

I recently got a new grinding machine which has enabled me make these [thanks to an online etsy friend who gifted me the $$ for this tool!!!!]. I still haven't used my new dry cut saw that should also prove to be very helpful, allowing me to cut more perfect slices (although the imperfect slices I've cut so far just add character truth be told). Getting better tools is making a huge difference in the amount of time I spend on these pipe pieces. Sometimes I wonder I'm not insane making something that takes up so much time and energy when in the end I really don't charge 'what it's worth'. For now I'm fine with that, it's still better than doing something I dislike for $$. It is more important to me to keep creating and moving the energy. Times are still tough out there and smaller, more affordable functional work is still something I feel strongly about making.

My railroad plate mixed media wall art pieces were the starting point for me as an artist and they eventually paved the road towards finding my niche with the railroad clock collection. When I left Arizona and my 'old life' I really didn't know what I would do. Art whispered to me. I followed that whisper all the way to Vermont. I stayed in a little studio apartment in Waterbury, VT and lived half a block away from the railroad tracks. All sorts of objects were thrown by the wayside as trails were being made and I couldn't help myself, I started picking them up and lugging them home.

It took about a year for me to make a body of work that was showable and sellable. And another year to begin my railroad clock series. I have only a handful of these railroad mixed media pieces left and feel motivated to have them find homes. Now thru Dec 31 I am offering free shipping (which is a 13-17 value as I will insure them too) as well as reduced price on all. new works for the holidays

I've got a lovely series of tall blue vases finished and will slowly begin adding more in the weeks to come. These are a chalky blue with interesting vertical markings, little round holes here and there and quite beautiful for an old pipe that was destined for the scrap yard. In the photo are some of my rebar 'flowers' which I've yet to put up on etsy as I have one more real live selling event for the holidays and like having them to display in my vases. Also, they are long and shipping is always my biggest burden since nothing is lightweight or inexpensive to mail. Not sure if I will sell these online, but never say never.

And this little gem is perfect to use as a planter decor vase or even a table centerpiece. You would want to put another container inside of this if placing food or plants in there as I've coated it with rust protector and enamel paint. It's a fun, short, fat sturdy vessel that will liven up any room!

Stay tuned I have several more vases to take pictures of and get in my shop just in time for holiday shopping!

treasuries and tumblr

finally made a treasury that made front page!

I have been having fun making treasuries lately. I thought I would stop for awhile as sometimes one has to wonder why they are sitting there making so many treasuries when they need to go make a buck instead. I have to say, I like that the treasuries are more thematic in approach (as a whole I notice more people doing that) and once you get into it it feels just as creative as making a piece of art! Seems more fun than ever too now that I've gotten a tumblr page. Blogs are more content driven, twitter I still dont get and facebook is more of a social boost for me. So where can one post random stuff that interests them without having to spout anything intelligent? tumblr works for me! It is FUN. People start reblogging your content and you get to watch this sort of six degrees of separation happening that I have not experienced on any of the other social networks. And like a treasury, you can 'market' others, yourself or just use it as a regular old blog and know that many will see it and it is effortless in comparison to writing a blog that you hope someone will stumble upon.

FuguDesigns: copper cuff

One of my favorite examples of how word can spread on tumblr is a bronze cuff I posted. When I saw this on etsy I had to have it in a treasury and decided to take it one step further and post it on tumblr. Four days later I have had over 90 'notes' as reblogs and 'likes' are called. That is from my post alone, that doesn't include people who have then posted it from other sites that posted it. I just looked and that cuff just sold! I think that is so cool. These map cuffs are INCREDIBLE by the way, so go check their shop out! And then go check out tumblr, its fun!

new chalky gray vases

I have so many vases lined up ready to finish it isn't even funny right now. I'm surprised I haven't broken a toe with them all set on my studio floor in crates. Funny thing about momentum, sometimes you can get so much accomplished and it feels effortless while other times it feels more like you are working 20 leagues below the sea. Ya know what I mean?

Alas. I have actually uploaded 2 of the 5 new 'chalky gray' vases. These things feel so cool. I love just holding them. And while you can't really see it in these photos, they actually have a glittery look when held in good lighting. Very cool that that didn't wash off when I was scrubbing them clean.

There is a total of five, the fifth has yet to be finished and it has a jagged top lip as opposed to these smooth ones. They are all tapered in size with the shorted being just over 6 inches and the 5th being just over 9" tall. I love too that there are blips of unexpected color in each one. These are fun! I just listed two of them on etsy, the rest will probably get up there sooner than later :)
